Online Exclusive! Kitchen 24 - Los Angeles

Feb 29, 2012

By Ashleigh VanHouten

Owners Errol and Kimberly Roussel, David Dickerson, and JT Fox had a clear vision for their second Kitchen 24 diner in Hollywood. “Our primary objective was to maintain and enhance all the elements that make up the Kitchen 24 brand,” says Errol. “We want the patron to immediately recognize and gain a sense of comfort knowing that they are dining at Kitchen 24.”

Los Angeles-based design studio Spacecraft Group worked on the first Kitchen 24 in 2008, and was commissioned to keep the new restaurant “in harmony” with the original, while refining the overall look by incorporating classic diner elements—large booths, a long bar, smooth surfaces—with whimsical touches. Spacecraft founder Kristofer Keith says he “took some inspiration from what a diner might look like on the Jetsons.”

According to Spacecraft architect Cara McConnell, Kitchen 24 has a “clean, space-y, almost airline” feel with rounded millwork and dropped soffits throughout. A Neapolitan ice cream color scheme abounds, subtly in the banquettes, in white terrazzo with brown and pink glass on the floor and bartops, and in rich chocolate wood laminate. Quilted stainless steel in the men’s restroom and large aluminum-framed mirrors add to the space-age feel.

For a sense of whimsy, there’s a large utensil chandelier and exterior fiberglass tables are from Anderson Surfboards and sport the diner’s logo. Aluminum chairs, custom umbrellas, and potted pink succulents round out the 2,000-square-foot open-air patio.

Design challenges often became opportunities—for example, “Deciding to wrap the bar and integrate the [dining area and coffee bar] enabled many other fun design moves to happen, like allowing for a super long bar and a DJ booth that looks over the large space,” Keith points out.
