W New York – Union Square Completes $15 Million Renovation

May 10, 2013

W New York - Union Square has completed a multi-layered renovation project. Part of the brand’s ongoing, $100 million commitment to renovate more than 11 of its properties across North America, the renovation includes the 270 guestrooms and top suites, W Living Room, Olives New York, and destination bar Lilium by Gerber Group.

Designed by New York-based Krause + Sawyer, the W Union Square Living room uses contrasting patterns and textures in the expanded space. Custom window seating in metallic leather, green tiger leather-backed houndstooth chairs, a U-shaped chesterfield sofa in embossed black paisley leather, and a tufted sofa in electric blue crocodile furnish the room. A beaded chain ceiling installation exudes downtown grit, while a black steel communal table is equipped with inlay plugs for chargers. Traditional lanterns and urns have also been tagged by local Bronx graffiti collective, TatsCru.

New York-based dash design and Wilson Associates remodeled guestrooms and suites to reflect the fashions of the neighborhood. Sculptural headboards represent an abstract view of Union Square, while silver window coverings mimic a man’s tie with silk fabric stitching. Contrasting with bohemian metallic blue materials, the wall is swathed in a sophisticated white.

Redesigned by Los Angeles-based Gulla Jonsdottir of G+ Design, Lillium bar takes inspiration from a cave of wild lilies. The 1,600-square-foot interior includes a twisted metal ceiling that cascades down the walls and complements the sculptural black steel lilies. Contoured wood and gold-tone accents evoke a feminine energy.

The new design of Olives New York by New York-based Jeffrey Beers International uses combinations of textures and materials—including dark woods and blackened steel⎯⎯to create a warm aesthetic. The expanded bar was moved to the center of the space, while U-shaped banquettes, an elevated chef’s table, and a nine-seat raw bar along the signature open kitchen add to the seating.
