ForrestPerkins Wraps Up Hotel Joule Expansion

May 8, 2013

The renovation of the Joule is being wrapped up by Dallas-based ForrestPerkins. Combining four existing buildings and two new, the renovations include seven retail spaces and the addition of a 30,000-square-foot modern building.

ForrestPerkins collaborated with New York-based Tihany Design⎯⎯which was in charge of creating the hotel concept and its interiors⎯⎯as well as Dallas-based architecture firm Architexas.

"It's exciting to see the way the many complex elements of this project have come together," says Deborah Lloyd Forrest, president of ForrestPerkins. "I applaud Tim Headington of the Headington Companies, owner of the Joule, for his vision to enhance and expand this world-class property."

Jerry Flemons⎯⎯senior project architect for the expansion⎯⎯oversaw the renovation of approximately 100,000 square feet of existing buildings. Collaborating with interior designer Yajaira Arenas, Flemons also designed the interior architecture for the hotel's retail areas.

TRAFFIC men's store features a raw but refined feel with exposed brick walls, custom-designed display cases, and mid-century decorative lighting. The distinctive black panels featured on one wall are made from petrified wood. As part of a historic building, TRAFFIC women’s store also boasts French-cut white oak floors stained gray with hints of lavender, while the millwork is done in white and cream. The original coffered ceiling was restored and painted white. TRAFFIC Play features white walls, white shelving, and stainless steel accents to contrast the ebony-stained oak floors.

TenOverSix features a gallery feel with a white terrazzo floor, soft white paint, and white cabinetry, while Weekend Coffee boasts Calacatta gold marble floors and countertops. Meanwhile, Taschen Library offers limited edition books among restored mosaics, and the 2,000-square-foot bar/lounge, Mirth & Refuge, includes leather booths.

ForrestPerkins also designed a new three-story building to connect the existing hotel tower to the guestroom tower addition to the east. Complementing the rooftop cantilevered glass front pool, an oversized glass elevator faces Main Street from the exterior of the Joule, transporting guests to the new 4,500-square-foot Garden Level terrace. They also designed a modern-open air pavilion on this level.

Says Forrest, "We were delighted to be so involved in the grand expansion of the Joule, which is playing such a major role in the revitalization of downtown Dallas.”
