Five Hawaii hotels are among recipients of the state’s annual Green Business awards, which recognize companies and organizations that operate in a sustainable manner. According to MauiNow.com, those properties include:
- Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club, which recycles most of its construction and electronic waste, as well as uses motion-sensor lights and low-flow plumbing fixtures
- Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, recognized for its reduced water usage, LED lighting, and adjustment of water heater settings
- The Kahala Hotel and Resort, which uses seawater pumped from deep water wells to cool its chillers, along with other initiatives such as implementing Energy Star-rated equipment, light sensors, low ceiling fans, and low-flow showers and faucets
- Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa, for using recycled glass planters and drought-tolerant plants to help save more than 4.7 million gallons of water a year
- Holiday Inn Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel, whose variable-speed chillers and other energy-efficiency measures have reduced energy use by over 20 percent; an upgraded cooling tower saves more than 624,000 gallons of water each year
