The Fort Lauderdale Grande Hotel & Yacht Club (formerly the Fort Lauderdale Marina Marriott, now an LXR Resort) recently emerged from a $70 million transformation that included new public areas, guestrooms (589 in all), swimming pool and tropical deck area, bar Antea, casual restaurant G overlooking the inlet marina, and new meeting space, from Los Angeles-based Robert Barry Design Associates, and the area debut of Jeffrey Chodorow's China Grill restaurant with interiors by New York City-based Jeffrey Beers International (architecture was done by Atlanta-based Cooper Carry).
"My approach was to re-establish the synergy between nature and interior spaces," says Barry, who also recently re-designed the guestrooms at LXR's El San Juan Hotel & Casino in Puerto Rico. "The design was ultimately influenced by the hotel's dramatic location along the Intracoastal Waterway. I capitalized on the tropical surroundings as well as the hotel's waterfront setting.”
An ocean-inspired palette (blue, green, white, and sand tones), artwork, and softly striped carpeting provide a perfect backdrop for sleek black furnishings and floor-to-ceiling windows in the guestrooms. Downstairs, Antea is decked out in rich alabaster, lush stones, and light-transmitting materials to create a warm glow, while a palette of green, orange, and white, a massive central chandelier, and expansive windows define the lobby. "Much of the space was broken up in disjointed sections; our task was to unify the areas and modernize the lobby promoting a sense of 'you’ve arrived,'" explains Barry. And a dramatic use of black and red sets the tone for China Grill.
