The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and Hospitality Design (HD) recently announced the winners of the 12th annual IIDA/HD Product Design Competition at the Platinum Circle Gala held during the 2008 Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo), May 14-17. This year's winners—all on display on the show floor—represent an exciting group of products heralded for their innovative and aesthetic properties.
Award categories included:
- Best of Competition
- Applied Finishes and Materials (Wallcoverings, Treatments, Paint/Coatings)
- Textiles (Upholstery and Bedspread/Drapery/Casement)
- Flooring (Carpet/Rugs, Hard Surfaces, Resilients)
- Seating: Individual (Dining, Lounge, and Outdoor)
- Seating: Group or Series (Dining, Lounge, and Outdoor)
- Lighting (Individual and Groupings/Series)
- Casegoods and Freestanding Furniture (Individual and Series/Collections)
- Accessories or Specialties (Hardware/Decorative Metals, Storage Systems, and Artwork/Signage)

The judges, Belinda Bennett, IIDA, the Bennett Design Group; Viveca Bissonnette, IIDA, Carrier Johnson; Conrad Bonet, IIDA, Bonet & Associates International LLC; and Brian G. Thornton, IIDA, AIA, Brian G. Thornton Designs, LLC, arrived early to the show to whittle down the large selection to between five and 20 products. They made their final decisions May 15 through in-person visits to the manufacturers on the show floor.
Awards in each category are not mandatory; judges must find exemplary new introductions whose properties include innovation, technical advancements, cost effectiveness, environmental responsibility, aesthetics, and need and usage in the hospitality industry. Client and user benefits were also evaluated.
