VingCard has announced two initiatives that will help hotels with their green initiatives. The company released AB RecycledCard as an answer to the estimated 18 million traditional plastic keycards that are discarded by hotels every week. The AB RecycledCards are made from Earthworks environmentally friendly plastic and contain 88 percent to 100 percent recycled material, depending on whether or not the card has a magnetic strip. The cards provide the same level of security and the same high-quality printing and personalization as traditional plastic keycards at no additional cost.
VingCard has also released the Signature RFID/NFC as an alternative to standard keycards. Using a near field communications (NFC)-capable cell phone, guests will receive a booking confirmation number, a room number, and an encrypted room key access code through Short Message System. This will allow them to skip check-in and proceed directly to their rooms, where their NFC-capable cell phone will unlock the door. As an added benefit, the Signature RFID/NFC locks require fewer battery changes, meaning that millions of batteries and keycards could be kept out of local landfills.
