The EPA has awarded the InterContinental Chicago with an Energy Star rating, making it the city's first hotel to earn the distinction.
The 800-room hotel changed out some of its 50-watt light bulbs and replaced them with 9-watt cold cathode bulbs, which saves more than 50,000 kilowatt hours a day. The InterContinental also installed motion sensors that adjust the room temperature when a guest leaves, reconfigured the heating system, cut back on water bottles, and now sends table scraps to farmers, who use them as compost.
